The annual award given to young Czech artists up to 35 years of age was established in 1990 from the impetus of the dramatist, novelist and former Czech president Václav Havel, the artist Theodor Pištěk and the poet and visual artist Jiří Kolář. It bears the name of the leading Czech art and literary critic, essayist and philosopher Jindřich Chalupecký.
It is awarded for an outstanding oeuvre in visual art. It is intended for the advancing generation of artists whose work has the potential to be acclaimed in the context of the Czech and international art scene and embodies an exceptional approach in terms of content and form.
The Award is organised by the Jindřich Chalupecký Society acting as a platform for Czech post-revolutionary and contemporary art which it supports and presents in a local and international context through exhibitions, residential stays for artists and curators, programmes for the public and research projects.
