Etuis for the Venus of Věstonice

This additional display presents designs by thirteen students from the Department of Product Design of the VŠUP Prague, created in the winter term 2016/2017 under the guidance of Michal Froněk, Jan Němeček and their assistant Michal Malášek.

The Venus of Věstonice, a world-famous artefact dating from the Palaeolithic period (29 000 - 25 000 BC), was found in the upper section of a prehistoric site between Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov. It was unearthed by a team of archaeologists led by Karel Absolon that carried out research in the area in 1924-1938.

The students' assignment was to create a special case for the Venus of Věstonice that would comply with both museum and preservation requirements, and that would also be attractive in aesthetic terms.

The Moravian Museum enabled the students a private viewings of the artefact, accompanied by a specialist lecture by Doc. Martin Oliva supervised by Dr. Martina Galetová. The students could examine the figurine closely, and through the story of its discovery and information about technical details acquired groundwork for their designs. These often combine old, traditional materials (precious wood, leather, metal) with modern technologies (composite materials, silicon, Sorbothane inflammable anti-vibration material, various lock systems, etc.).

The students' models of etuis for the Venus of Věstonice are supplemented with a projection of the visualizations of display cases in which the Venus of Věstonice could be placed at a long-term exhibition.

The display case for the crown jewels of King Charles IV was designed by architect Josef Gočár in 1928.The exhibition pavilion for an archaeological display with the model of a mammoth, created for the Exhibition of Contemporary Culture held in Brno in 1928, was prepared by archaeologist Karel Absolon in a space designed by the modernist architect Jiří Kroha. Exhibition design in this country has a long tradition, which will hopefully prove inspiring for young artists.
