Reflecting developments in graphic design and visual culture for more than 50 years now, the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno is one of the oldest and most significant events of its kind. The theme of the 26th edition of the Brno Biennial is education in the field of graphic design and visual communication.

The Study Room takes a look at how references, in the form of publications, play a role in the development of a design related practice.
The idea of a study room came to existence in domestic architecture around the 15th century and ownership of a study was a sign of education and civilised taste. Often these study rooms featured depictions of Saint Jerome, patron saint of librarians, scholars, and students alike.
Six contributors have been invited to propose a selection of publications that are influential to their work. The invited are designers David Bennewith, Henk Groenendijk, Louise Hold Sidenius and Linda van Deursen, artist Koenraad Dedobbeleer and theorist Tom Vandeputte. In the exhibition the book selections are featured alongside a portrait of Saint Jerome, from the collection of the Moravian Gallery.
These chosen publications form the start of a new entry in the upcoming permanent collection of the library of the Moravian Gallery in Brno, which is dedicated solely to graphic design and visual communication.
The Study Room is curated by Pieter Verbeke (BE) and Elisabeth Klement (EE)
This exhibition was commissioned in the form of an assignment, given by the curators of the 26th Brno Biennial 2014.
