During the four summer months in 2012 the Moravian Gallery in Brno will again become the centre of important international events which every two years brings to Brno hosts of visitors with an interest in contemporary design.
The International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno was launched
in 1963 and is the oldest exhibition of graphic design in the
world. The main organisers are the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the
Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
In 2012 the Brno Biennial enters its 25th year with an innovative
concept. The abandoning of the existing exhibition categories will
make it possible to present what were truly the most interesting
works in graphic design created over the past two years within the
framework of the competition. The international competition sets
out to introduce a wideranging spectrum of contemporary graphic
design across different media and formats.
The three principal pillars of the 25th Brno Biennial continue to
consist of the international competition, the guest curator
exhibition and an international symposium. The Brno Biennial is
further accompanied by a rich programme of related collateral
exhibitions, cultural programmes and events. The corporate design
for BB 2012 will be created by Adéla Svobodová.
The competition exhibition which is open to all professional
graphic artists is based on the quality of the submitted works
assessed by an international team of curators: Tomáš Celizna
(CZ/NL), Na Kim (KR), Adam Macháček (CZ/USA), Radek Sidun (CZ),
Marta Sylvestrová (CZ) and Adam Štěch (CZ).
The organizers invited as guest curators designers from the Dutch
graphic studio Experimental Jetset to present their specific
approach to contemporary graphic design. Experimental Jetset is
made up of three designers - Marieke Stolk, Danny van den Dungen
and Erwin Brinkers. They met during their studies and towards the
end of the 1990s opened their own studio in Amsterdam. Graphic
design in their rendering is defined as "language changed into
objects".
The international symposium is extended to a three-day meeting
with
lectures by experts and graphic designers of world renown offering
a deeper insight into the issues of contemporary graphic design and
visual communication and providing a platform for face-to-face
meetings with the cream of the most stimulating personalities in
the field. The principal theme of the design is the boundary limits
of design and the crossing over of design to other media.
The related exhibition programme will introduce the laureate of the
Brno Biennial 2008 Kasia Korczak (PL/BE), the Luminaries of Czech
Graphic Design series will show Květa Pacovská, the Works from
California exhibition will be prepared for the Brno Biennial by the
American curator Joe Sueda, and Karel Haloun will display his rare
collection of music posters.
