Collectors and Patrons VI: Marie Richterová (1927–2011)

MUDr. Marie Richterová was a doctor from Brno and a sophisticated lover of art and objects of beauty. Although we cannot call her a collector in the strict sense of the word, the set of art objects and antiques that she amassed during her life is more than remarkable. Born in 1927 in Horšovský Týn, she lived, from 1934, in Brno where from the 1950´s she worked as a renowned doctor. Her professional career culminated in a long engagement as the senior consultant at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Faculty Hospital in Brno-Bohunice.

Art was her life-long hobby. Occasional purchases from antiquarians and some private collectors, as well as gifts from living artists, and in many cases grateful patients (it is worth mentioning that she specialized in liver diseases), helped to extend the collection of beautiful objects of artistic value, encompassing remarkable works of Gothic sculpture, Baroque and modern painting, graphic art and handicrafts.

In the year 2002 doctor Richterová decided to donate a selection of the most valuable pieces from her collection to the Moravian Gallery in Brno so that other people - art lovers and gallery visitors like her - could enjoy them. The exhibition, presenting a large part of the donation, is also meant as a homage to one of the most generous donors to our institution in recent years.
