Under the Shield of Minerva

Austrian 18 th century drawing from the collections of the Moravian Gallery in Brno

Around 1765 the famous Franz Anton Maulbertsch created a drawing with an allegorical representation of the Victory of Minerva over Envy, in which he highlighted the traditional role of Minerva as the patron and protector of artists. The theme was particularly popular in the milieu of the Viennese Academy, where the other artists, whose masterful drawings are presented at this exhibition, had also been schooled.
