To punctuate the string of anniversaries in 2008 (the number 8 being synonymous with years which have been particularly momentous in recent Czech history) the Moravian Gallery in Brno decided to stage an exhibition introducing to the public the remarkable yet little known art collection of the Military History Institute in Prague, which holds a multitude of extraordinary works by important Czech painters, graphic artists and sculptors.
Among them, gems such as those by František Kupka, Václav Špála, Vojtěch Preissig, Otto Gutfreund and the exceptional, although virtually unknown works by Alén Diviš. Also included are legionnaires' posters, paintings capturing the atmosphere of battle, drawings from concentration camps, examples of art in the socialist realism mould, as well as caricatures and works exposing the absurdity of war.
