Jakub Schikaneder

Jakub Schikaneder (1855-1924) was a Czech painter, known for his soft paintings of the outdoors, often lonely in mood.

He trained (1870-78) at the Academy in Prague and then (1878-80) at the Akademie in Munich where he was much influenced by the realistic embodiment of spiritual and mystical themes in the work of the older Czech painter Gabriel Max. On Schikaneder's return to Prague he took part in the painted decoration of the National Theatre, an allegorical treatment of the Three Eras of Czech History (in situ). From 1885 he taught at the School of Decorative Art in Prague, subsequently becoming Professor of Decorative Painting. During the 1880s his work consisted mainly of rural and urban genre scenes, painted in discordant combinations of pale and sombre colours, and generally resigned or melancholy in mood: Traces of Winter (1884), On All Souls' Day (1888; both Prague, N.G., Convent of St Agnes).
