Jan Štursa (1880-1925): Drawings
Drawings by major Czech sculptors provide a remarkable insight into the development of artistic ideas and final works. Štursa's drawings make up the first part of a cycle of small-scale shows which will be held in the Cabinet room within the permanent exhibition of modern art. Whereas before the First World War Štursa would only employ drawing as a means to capture his free sculptural visions and it was marked by firm contour lines and the idealization of the human figure, in 1914 the mental content of the artist's drawings and their formal aspect changed considerably, in favour of visual authenticity. Some of these dynamic drawings bear witness to the genesis of one of Štursa's best-known sculptures,TheWounded(1921), inspired by the artist's first-hand experience from the Galician front.
