The visual style of the 28th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2018

The visual style of the forthcoming 28th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2018 is the work of Matěj Činčera and Jan Kloss from the OKOLO team of curators. In their design they centre, in particular, on the basic communication of information about the event, and employ graphic design in its elementary form. In contrast to previous biennial years that were typically promoted through various form plays and only exceptionally conveyed the essence, the designers see their approach as a service to the content and function of the biennial.

The promotional materials include photographs in different compositions supplemented with short captions, producing helpful information about the contents of the individual exhibitions and symposium guests. Looking at the biennial invitation or poster, the visitors will have an overview of the content of the whole event, and without having to read the programme will get an idea about what the 28th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2018 has in store for them.

"In the graphic design of the 28th biennial we decided to work exclusively with type by the typographer František Štorm who received an award for his lifetime contribution to the discipline in the previous year, and who will have a retrospective at the next year's biennial," says Matěj Činčera. "In this way, the promotion of the biennial will be an exhibition in itself, a hidden presentation of Štorm's work," adds Jan Kloss.

The visual style of the 28th Brno Biennial avoids being static; instead, it responds to the different requirements and purposes of the individual events. It is a kind of system modified on the basis of what is topical and what needs to be specially promoted. First it can motivate artists to take part in the competition, later to participate in the opening of an exhibition or symposium, and finally to visit a particular exhibition or accompanying event.

This approach echoes the overall concept of the forthcoming year that should be, according to the organisers, more open to a wider range of interests, without being restricted to a particular medium or subject.
