Moravian and Silesian art collections contain a relatively large group of remarkable artworks conceived in foreign artistic circles. They entered the Czech lands as period imports or, more often later, as the results of more recent collecting activities. As the style of these artworks exceeds the domestic context of art and history, and their study is thus lengthy and demanding, they are chiefl y found outside the scope of specialists’ interest.
This series of approximately fi fty workspredominantly consists of high-quality solitary pieces, mainly plate paintings and polychromed carvings, although several cycles also appear. The pieces are interesting works of different origin, created in the course of the 15th century and the fi rst half of the 16th century. The largest group indicates links with the Austrian milieu (Crucifi xion plates by the "Master of Linz", the circle of the Master of Rabenden from Tyrol, etc.). Works from southern Germany (Erasmus Grasser, Munich painting, Monogramist HS) and the Rhine Basin are also represented, as is the style of Tilman Riemenschneider imitated by copious followers. The exhibition is the second major project in the recent history of the Moravian Gallery in Brno concentrating on medieval art. The fi rst one was the large exhibition "From the Gothic to the Renaissance: Visual Culture in Moravia and Silesia 1400-1550.
