Matěj Smetana (1980) is one of most remarkable young artists working in the modern Czech Republic. His work has appeared regularly at contemporary art exhibitions. He, a graduate of the Faculty of Visual Arts, Brno, produces objects, installations, videos, comics and animations. His conceptual work frequently explores the role of randomness and the relationship between conventional symbolic meanings and their possible visualisation through illusionary means. He has earned recognition with his Flags, Hradčanoid and Czechoid. The artist describes Instructions, his latest series of animations, as "things I didn't want to make".
