The Art of Art Restoration

The Work of the Restoration Department of Moravian Gallery in Brno 1996–2006

Restoration is first of all a service for art, which must be fulfilled with seriousness and love for the art, which should be saved. Bohuslav Slansky, 1956

The museum and gallery collections in the Czech Republic treasure up innumerable values embodied in hundreds of thousands of collectible items from all sorts of branches. Each of these collections contains items that condition - whether prevention, necessary or acute - requires professional treatment. Unfortunately, only the largest institutions possess their own restoration workshops, such as the Moravian galery in Brno and its specificity is in particular collection diversity of fine and applied art. The restoration department MG carries out conservation and restoration of collectible items for their preservation, safekeeping, research and presentation. It evaluates the condition of the collection funds, conceives conservation and restoration treatments, organizes the cooperation with external specialists. Prepares restoration documentations and reporting condition of the works, maintains restoration reports files, also serves as a specialized consulting center for conservation and restoration technologies within the Moravian region. Beyond this it also solves the project Research of materials and techniques of paintings, plastics and applied art from the collection of the Moravian gallery in Brno within the institutional grant provided to the Moravian gallery in Brno and participates in international research projects in the field of research techniques and materials. The last decade of work of the MG restoration department brought a number of tasks associated with the daily care of the collections, as well as preparation of large exposition projects home and abroad. Through our restorers' hands passed within that period thousands of art objects. All these facts lead to the idea to present publicly the achieved results and potential methods, to remind the basic principles of this exacting branch and also contribute to discussions among experts and interested public.
