The photographic collection
The Moravian Gallery photographic collection was founded in
1962, making it one of the oldest of its type to be established in
an art museum in Europe. It contains over 25,000 works,
representing the entire history of photography in all its forms in
the territory now constituting the Czech and Slovak Republics. In
addition, there are over 5,000 items that date from the period
before 1918 from all over the world, and in particular from the
further territories that once made up the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The collection of international work from after 1918 is much
smaller, with around 300 photographs.
A note on the status of the collection, an inventory of the
photographers represented in it, and lists of exhibitions based on,
or including, items from the collection appear in the exhibition
catalogue 150 fotografií [A Hundred and Fifty Photographs], Brno
1989. A list of purchases and activities appears in the
catalogue My 1948-1989 [Us, 1948-1989], Photographs from the
Collection of the Moravian Gallery, Brno (Brno, 1999).
