Are Ideas Enough Today?

Reduta Theatre, Zelný trh 4, Brno
23-24 June, 2010

Playing its traditional part in the International Biennials of Graphic Design in Brno, the Reduta Theatre, Zelný trh 4, Brno will play host to the 2010 international symposium opening the 24th event in the series.

Papers by leading graphic artists, designers, typographers and art theoreticians from Europe, the USA and Japan, accompanied by slide shows and videos, will be given in Czech, Slovak and English. Interpretation to and from English will be provided.

The proposed subject of the symposium is based around contemporary activities in graphic design and visual culture that are found, due to the dynamic development of modern artistic means, amidst a collision of ideas as the driving forces behind the creative process and the ever-growing potential of digital technologies. These have certainly rendered the design process more democratic, since everyone able to acquaint themselves with the necessary techniques can take part in it, even without an academic education. However, can quality results be achieved without professional preparation at schools and without a primary key observation and idea, although at the required technical quality, by adhering to pre-existing formulae? Are the historical references, quotations and retro-styles that generate new trends, including seasonal ones, in designers' work, evidence of historical connections, or just tried and tested procedures that have been constantly modified and multiplied over time? Yes or no? What is the role of poster at the present time?

The lecturers will address these questions in their contributions, subjects that are everyday reality for graphic designers: the relationship between art and design, experimental and self-initiated projects, the relationship between school and practice; the importance of personal experience as a particularly effective filter in the development of design methodology; the understanding of design as cosmopolitan practice that unites different cultures and time epochs; exceptional forms of symbolic meaning and identification technologies that are neglected in design; respect and responsibility, visual communication identity. The programme of lectures features something new: two panels with guest designers from the Czech Republic and abroad. The opportunity to compare stances in design and discuss related issues with lecturers from a number of countries of different historical and social experience, and of various positions, will certainly prove inspirational for all the participants in the symposium.

The symposium is intended
